An S-batten is a shape-control system. Its unloaded shape may look unusual, but under tension it supports the designed draft. When outhaul is released, part of the shape can reverse and reduce power. This allows a sail to carry useful depth while still depowering effectively.

Sometimes. They only work with the same brand and the same model mast. You cannot grab random mast sections from different brands and expect them to work. Some manufacturers design certain mast models so different-length tops and bottoms can be interchanged while maintaining the correct bend characteristics. For example, the KS3 4.9 can be rigged several different ways with a Hot Rod mast depending on sailor weight and desired feel. A 370 mast is an excellent fit for sailors around 75 kilograms or lighter. It can also be rigged with a 370 top and 400 bottom to reduce extension while giving the sail a slightly stiffer, more powerful feel. For heavier sailors, or those wanting maximum power from the 4.9, a full 400 mast is the best option.

Use the printed numbers as initial references. Actual settings can vary because extension scales, boom-head position, mast generation and personal preference are not identical. Mark the settings that produce the best result on your own mast and extension.

Use enough downhaul to remove unwanted horizontal wrinkles and establish the intended leech, but do not automatically pull until the top becomes extremely loose. Add enough outhaul for clean batten rotation and a stable draft. Excess downhaul or outhaul can remove the power you are trying to create.

Insufficient outhaul may be allowing the lower body to become too deep. If you are going to increase the outhaul, you will most likely also need to increase the downhaul to match. The sail does not want to be out of balance with too much outhaul and not enough downhaul, or vice versa. On models such as the KS3, adequate outhaul is important for clean lower-batten rotation. A sail can look flatter on land yet rotate and perform better on the water.

No. Some wrinkles are created intentionally by broad seaming, luff curve and batten geometry. A visible S-shaped lower-batten area on certain KS3 generations was part of the design. Do not remove every wrinkle with extra downhaul unless the model’s instructions say to do so.
