The World's Lightest Production Wave Sail – Engineered for Championship Performance

The KS3 Lithium represents a quantum leap in wave sail design. We've taken one of the world's best-selling 3-batten sails and transformed it into the undisputed lightest production wave sail on the planet. Our 4.9m standard KS3 weighs 3.10kg – impressive on its own. The Lithium version slashes that weight by an astounding 30%, delivering just 2.1kg of pure, uncompromising performance.

But the revolution goes beyond weight. Developed in partnership with Dimension/Polyant, Lithium's advanced materials create an entirely new riding experience. When underpowered, the sail feels tighter and more powerful, helping you plane earlier. When overpowered, it becomes softer and more forgiving than the standard KS3, delivering that coveted "surfy" feel that makes wave riding truly magical.

A Legacy of Championship Victories

Initially developed in 2013 by Kauli Seadi, Jeffrey Henderson, and Tom Hammerton, the KS3 has earned its reputation as the finest and most respected 3-batten wave sail in the world. Many consider it among the best wave sails, period, regardless of batten count.

The results speak for themselves: multiple Aloha Classic victories in the pro division, Bernd Roediger's 2022 PWA wave contest win in Capo Verde against the world's elite, and his 2024 Aloha Classic championship. The KS3 stands alone as the only 3-batten sail proven to dominate at the highest levels of competitive wave riding. For down-the-line wave sailing, many riders consider it simply the best in the world.

Explosive Response, Rock-Solid Stability

The KS3 is the most stable and direct sail in our lineup. Its 3-batten design dramatically reduces sail momentum, translating to lightning-fast response times and exceptional feel. The result? More explosive wave rides, quicker aerial maneuvers, and precise control exactly when you need it.

Even in flat water conditions, the KS3 excels. It maintains a locked-in feel across all wind ranges and seemingly refuses to become overpowered, giving you confidence in any conditions.

Game-Changing Window Technology

The ultra-lightweight 125-micron Lithium monofilm window is a revelation. Crystal clear and remarkably durable, the thinner film is actually less prone to cracking than heavier monofilm while feeling noticeably less stiff. The window extends all the way to the mast, providing virtually unrestricted vision while wave riding.

This enhanced peripheral vision isn't just a convenience – it fundamentally improves your balance and spatial awareness, making jibes cleaner and maneuvers more intuitive. It's the most significant evolution in the KS3 design since its inception.

Built to Last in the Harshest Conditions

We've reinforced the foot area with SPIDERwebbing® ripstop and added a new top chafe pad constructed from our improved lightweight ROX Webbing. The ROX material sleeve is so tough it can even resist a broken mast.

After a decade of testing and refinement, we've solved the batten breakage challenge with virtually unbreakable epoxy battens that handle the extraordinary loads placed on a 3-batten sail in heavy surf. Our ballistic batten SuperSkin® on all 8mm and mini battens adds structure and contains any potential breakage, allowing for clean, damage-free replacement.

BUILT TO HANDLE

I n n o v a t i o n

Originally designed and tested at our Hot Sails Maui Design Centre in 2013 by Kauai Seadi, Jeffrey Henderson and Tom Hammerton. The KS3 has earned its reputation as the finest and most respected 3-batten wave sail in the world. Many consider it among the best wave sails, period, regardless of batten count.

In 2019 we evolved the KS3 by moving the window frame forward connecting it to the mast sleeve. This improved the down th eline vision and transformed the sail performance with a wider wind range and a more direct feeling.

In 2024 we revolutionized the KS3 by incorporating our Lithium material which is a P85 Triple Laminate sail cloths from DP® providing a super light weight cutting edge carbon reinforced scrim sail body.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can a KS3 feel underpowered in light or side-on wind?

The KS3 emphasizes control, maneuverability and drive when powered, particularly in wave conditions. The KS3 does feel exceptional once powered but is not always the easiest choice for consistently underpowered sailing. The sail needs to be rigged for planing, which means using significant outhaul and downhaul and choosing a size appropriate for the conditions. In side-onshore wind, rig a larger size. In sideshore wind, rig normally. In side-offshore wind, a slightly smaller size may be appropriate.

What is an S-batten?

An S-batten is a shape-control system. Its unloaded shape may look unusual, but under tension it supports the designed draft. When outhaul is released, part of the shape can reverse and reduce power. This allows a sail to carry useful depth while still depowering effectively.

What are the advantages of Lithium construction?

Lithium is Hot Sails Maui's ultra-light laminate construction. Its purpose is not simply to make a sail lighter on a scale; it reduces the amount of material the sailor must lift, accelerate and redirect while sailing. This makes the rig feel easier during waterstarts, transitions, jumps and wave riding, and the benefit becomes especially noticeable in larger sail sizes and marginal wind.

The weight reduction can be substantial. A 5.8 KS3 Lithium can weigh nearly one kilogram less than the same size in conventional construction, and some 4.6 Lithium sails weigh less than conventional 3.0 sails. A 6.4 KS3 Lithium can weigh under six pounds. The result is a larger sail that feels much smaller and less tiring in the hands.

Lithium also gives the sail a distinctive reflex response. The laminate returns quickly to its designed shape after being loaded or disturbed, rather than remaining stretched or distorted. This produces a lively, responsive feel while maintaining excellent control in gusts. Because the sail holds its shape so well, Lithium can also provide an unusually wide wind range. On the KS3, size gaps of half a square meter or more are practical, allowing fewer sails to cover a larger range of conditions.

The lower weight is particularly valuable in light wind. Less sail weight must be supported before the board is planing, and the rig is easier to pump, reposition and keep balanced while riding a wave. The sail can retain the power of its stated size while feeling lighter and more manageable than a smaller conventionally constructed sail.

Lithium is less sensitive to ultraviolet degradation than conventional polyester X-ply and has excellent resistance to a small tear continuing to spread. Any cut or damaged seam should still be inspected and repaired, but the structural laminate does not normally rip progressively in the same way as many traditional sailcloths.

Lithium construction does not make every sail model feel the same. It preserves the character of the original design while reducing weight and increasing response. A SuperFreak ME Lithium retains the quiet, soft feel of the SuperFreak but becomes considerably lighter and more responsive. FireLight, Qu4d and KS3 enjoy the same weight-reduction and reflex advantages while retaining their own handling characteristics.

The window is a separate choice from the Lithium structural body. A monofilm window produces the lightest and most direct version of the sail, but the window is considered a replaceable wear component after extensive use. An InSight Vision® window adds some weight but creates a softer and quieter sail with much greater resistance to scratching, ultraviolet damage, folding and long-term wear, with a low weight penalty.

As with any extreme lightweight construction, concentrated load areas must be carefully engineered. Early Lithium production identified areas near the tack, lower batten, mast sleeve and some hardware that required additional reinforcement or revised sewing. Those lessons have been incorporated into current construction updates.

Lithium is therefore much more than a lightweight version of a conventional sail. It combines exceptionally low weight, rapid reflex, reduced distortion, wide wind range, strong light-wind performance and long-term ultraviolet resistance to create a noticeably different sailing experience.

What do P85, P-85, Project 85 and Lithium mean?

P85 is the underlying material designation used during development, while Lithium is Hot Sails Maui's branded name for sails built from that material. References to P85, P-85, P 85 and Project 85 in older correspondence should therefore be read as part of the same Lithium development history, not as separate sailcloth families.

How much weight did the early Project 85 development remove?

In one documented early development sail, the complete sail weight was reduced from approximately 3.10 kilograms to 2.24 kilograms - a reduction of about 0.86 kilograms. This was achieved by treating weight as a complete-system problem rather than simply changing one panel. Nonessential material was removed and P85 was used extensively, including in the side panels of the luff sleeve.

Why does reducing sail weight matter beyond the number on a scale?

Every maneuver requires the sailor to lift, accelerate, stop and redirect the rig. Lower weight reduces rotational inertia and the effort required during pumping, waterstarts, transitions, jumps and wave riding. On a foil, it also makes it easier to keep the rig balanced while the board is moving slowly or the sail is briefly unloaded.

What does reflex mean when describing Lithium?

Reflex describes how quickly the sail returns toward its designed shape after a gust, pump or maneuver disturbs it. A light, stable laminate can respond rapidly without remaining stretched or distorted. The practical result is a lively sail that reacts quickly while maintaining a stable draft.

Is every part of a Lithium sail made from the same material?

No. Lithium describes the primary lightweight construction, but a complete sail still uses specialized materials for windows, luff sleeves, batten pockets, tack and clew reinforcements, seams and hardware attachment points. The lightest successful construction comes from matching each material to its load rather than using one cloth everywhere.
